Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease is the gradual breakdown of the cushioning discs between vertebrae. It can cause chronic pain, stiffness, and nerve compression — but is often manageable without surgery.

Overview

About Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) refers to the natural wear and weakening of the spinal discs over time. Discs lose hydration, height, and shock-absorbing ability, which can lead to chronic back or neck pain and contribute to herniations, stenosis, and facet arthritis.

DDD is more accurately described as a process than a disease. Many people have disc degeneration without significant pain — others develop persistent symptoms that respond well to targeted, non-surgical treatment.

Common symptoms

  • Chronic low back or neck pain that comes and goes
  • Pain that improves with movement and worsens with prolonged sitting
  • Radiating pain into the arms or legs
  • Stiffness after rest or in the morning
  • Reduced spinal flexibility
Causes & risk factors

What causes degenerative disc disease

Natural aging and progressive disc dehydration

02

Repetitive loading from work, sport, or daily activity

03

Prior spine injury or trauma

04

Genetic factors influencing disc strength

05

Smoking, which accelerates disc degeneration
